Character Information
Name: Hal "Otacon" Emmerich. The Otacon nickname tends to be what he uses online, and is a blatant reference to his more-than-slight Japanophile tendencies.
Series/Fandom: Metal Gear Solid
Age: 17 at the moment - he started school early, let's say.
Gender: Male.
Sexuality: Bisexual, being more likely to grow emotionally attached to males and being slightly more likely to grow sexually attached to females. (Explanation: biologically, he's pretty close to straight. Thanks to one screwed up family life, with essentially nonconsensual incest and other things he didn't care for, Otacon has a tendency to stray away from girls [a reverse Oedipean complex – anything like his mother scares the living crap out of him]. The emotional attraction to males is not aided by a rather dependent personality which was – once again – caused largely by his traumatic past with both parents. The desire to be protected leads to a natural inclination towards the stereotypically "stronger" sex (and those females who fit the role as well). At the same time, however, he is a male with a healthy dose of testosterone, and he's definitely not above attraction to females (especially those that would fit in with the more weeaboo side of him).
Student or Faculty Member/Professor: Student, freshman year.
Major: Dual major, electrical engineering and computer sciences.
Minor: Don't think he'd have one with the dual major and all. Nevertheless, since he is a genius on a mathematical/scientific level, if he did have a minor, it'd be mathematics.
Residence: Otacon chooses to simply live in the dorms. Saves money and all, since he's independent of any familial aid.
Occupation: Otacon runs a computer repair/upgrade business, simply named "Philanthropy," by himself. It's a very small business, entirely run and owned by Otacon from his dorm room/online, and customers are relatively infrequent. Nevertheless, it keeps him able to attend college, albeit barely.
Appearance: Otacon is, to put it simply, a massive nerd. Although he is by no means fat - rather lean and tall, actually - it is obvious from the first glance that little to no thought, aside from showering, actually goes into his outward appearance. His hair is long and shaggy, easily reaching his shoulders, and it goes uncombed on all but the rarest of occasions. When the mop of hair isn't obscuring his face, it reveals a - once again - happily nerdy face. A light stubble is constantly present from the frequent days in which he forgets to shave, and a pair of omnipresent glasses lie on the slippery slope of his harshly angular nose. However, despite (or perhaps through) his unkempt appearance, he is not unattractive; the light grin on his face actually serves to create a rather cute young man.
This appearance is not aided by his clothing, sadly; less thought goes into what he wears than what he looks like. His most frequent choice of attire is a pair of worn, torn jeans and a t-shirt in similar condition. On the rare occasion that he feels the need to dress "appropriately," he can be seen in a pair of khakis and a sweater or a knit shirt. (Of particular note is the lack of diversity in these departments: his closet has next to no room for extra outfits thanks to the overwhelming surplus of everything electronic.)
Personality: As has already been duly noted, Otacon is a nerd of the highest caliber. As such, no "Personality" section would be complete without a brief explanation of just how nerdy he truly is. Otacon has an intense love for all things Japanese - he's an otaku to the max. [This is, laughably enough, completely canonical.] He owns figurines of everything, he buys anime compulsively (when he has enough money for it, of course), and he even is majoring in what he has chosen solely so he can attempt and develop the mechas of yore. [This is, even more laughably, also canonical.] As is also standard for those of the nerdy persuasion, he is almost always completely immersed in electronics. He is no stranger to upgrading and doing crazy things to his computer, even at college in his little dorm room - the small, homemade radiator which houses the pipes for his liquid cooling system outside his window shows exactly how devoted he can get to his electronics. His room is almost always kept dark, although this is not from a wish to remain away from the light; rather, it's an attempt to keep at least some of the head out of his unnaturally heated home. Despite this love for everything electrical, however, he is by no means a hermit, and is often seen outside, relaxing underneath a tree or asleep on the grass.
This nerdy outlook on life is largely due to his massive stores of intelligence. By no means is Otacon athletic; he's spent all his time absorbing every single tidbit of knowledge he can find. He does beautifully in whatever class he chooses, although he only truly flourishes in the maths and sciences. (The exception are any non-digital fine arts and physical education; except for his somewhat decent voice, Otacon is completely free of any artistic or athletic merit.) Any question that might be asked, any trivia that's ever brought up in any realm but sports, almost any question that can be thought of can be answered by Otacon. The nerdy stereotype is only furthered by his somewhat absent-minded approach to life; if he can't get completely enthusiastic about whatever it is he's doing, he often forgets the things he needs. This is not to say that he is unreliable, as he never fails in a pinch; rather, if he doesn't care enough to try hard, he doesn't care enough to try at all.
Further down past the exterior nerd, however, lies a rather bruised and beaten soul. To say that Otacon has had a rough childhood is an understatement; at a young age, he was sexually and emotionally abused for an unknown period of time by his still-married mother. This, couple with his father's advent and subsequent suicide, has led to an extremely dependent personality - he clutches the few people who he thinks can "protect" him tightly, as an emotional shield of sorts. He is quick to befriend completely, and rarely - if ever - keeps a grudge, thanks to a somewhat self-deprecating attitude. He is also horrible at telling a lie and disguising his emotions. He is painfully honest, especially with emotions, and if he develops a crush it's all he can do to not turn into a stuttering mess. He also is willing to go out of his way to help others - not necessarily due to a natural integrity and compassion (although those traits are present), but often so he can feel like he has some form of purpose. All of these traits combined create Hal Emmerich.
History:
(Note: Otacon's history is largely canonical, but simply edited to work in the real world + edited so he went to college instead of self-education through the internets.)
Otacon was born as Hal Randolph Emmerich, the only child of a simple American family of German descent. At a young age, however, his ever-frail mother died unexpectedly. Although the loss was major to Hal, who at this point was old enough to comprehend death and its related consequences, it was an even worse blow to his father. A few years later, a few months after Otacon turned thirteen, Otacon's father remarried to a British woman with a daughter of her own, a little nerdy girl named Emma. Needless to say, Emma and Otacon got along very well. It might be said a little too well, in fact - thanks to the similar age of the two and the growing influence of hormones and the like, Otacon and Emma quickly developed a mutual crush on each other. His new British stepmother found out; however, thanks to a history of mental instability and the like, Otacon's stepmother took this sign as an opportunity to instead take Otacon for herself. The woman quickly began a routine of sexually and emotionally abusing Otacon - a routine which Otacon's father quickly found out. Driven by the loss of his first wife and his second wife and son's "betrayal," Mr. Emmerich committed suicide by drowning himself, dragging in Emma as well. Emma survived the ordeal; however, the entire process left her completely estranged from both her mother and her stepbrother, and thanks to her newly frail condition (from the damage caused to her lungs by the near-death experience), Emma was put in protective custody. Otacon, meanwhile, chose to live as an emancipated minor.
Otacon chose to live alone for the next two years, actively refusing to let the State take custody of him. (He was aided by his rather formidable will and knowledge; by reading whatever books of law were available relating to the subject, Otacon was able to find enough loopholes and conditions that he could prove himself worthy of living alone.) During this period of time, Otacon grew more and more hermetic, choosing to spend more time by the computer and his books than in the outside the world. A month before he turned seventeen, he graduated out of high school and promptly left his home, putting as much distance as he could between him and his still-living stepmother. Upon his acceptance into Evergrove University, he moved into the freshman dorms.
